Tana Dumoulin: Power it using redstone :).I usually put a torch near the middle of my circuit to power it, or you can power it by using a lever.
Glynda Darrin: You can also just place a switch in a block adjacent to the powered rail, and it will magically power them when switched, without the need for redstone. Also, yes, a powered rail without any power being fed to it does act as a brake, they are a nice way to stop your cart rather than placing a block to run in to. On a side note, powered rails will not move your cart unless the cart has some initial speed, so it has to be on a slope, or have been pushed etc. before the powered rail will accelerate it....Show more
