When an interviewer asks for 3 references...?

Seema Hosfeld: There are personal references (i.e. friends and responsible members of the community who will vouch for your character and work ethic) and professional references, which consist of recommendations from former co-workers and supervisors. Generally when you are asked for a reference, they are looking for a professional reference. If they want a letter of recommendation, which might be requested for certain positions, they will specifically request one of you....Show more

Arden Strachn: Just phone #s and sometimes they ask for their adress. Just make sure you let the ppl that you wrote down know that you used them as a reference bc its unprofessional when they call those ppl and they are confused...but if they are like "Oh yea...hes a good guy bla bla bla..." But make sure you dont put friends or family...bc of course they are going to say good things about you. Put coaches, teachers, recent employers...ppl that know how responsible you are and can tel! l them how you would do in the work environment. It also looks better when they ask your relationship to your reference on your application....Show more

Norine Lomonte: usually people you know, had been your employer, etc.and just names, place of business, phone numbers...

Marielle Hedeiros: If they are asking for job references, then the name of the person, their job title, name of the company. If you want to (but it's not mandatory), you can also add what your position was and the dates you worked for that company. If they're asking for personal references, then you just put the name of your person and a phone or address (and you can add what your relationship is--friend, former coworker, etc.).You should then also alert the people you've listed as references so they know why some stranger is calling to find out about you--it's a courtesy and prepares your people to give you a brilliant recommendation....Show more

Delmy Varano: On a job application, it's! three names with phone numbers and addresses. On school appli! cations, you may have to ask if they need a referral letter or just three names of people with phone numbers and addresses. If you've never had a job or volunteered, you can use three people around the community that you've helped or if you've just graduated maybe a teacher you had. Just contact the school and ask. But make sure it's someone older that has experience working with you. And it can't be a family member. That's how I've been taught to do resumes....Show more

Pamela Meno: Usually it means phone numbers and names of people you have worked for.

Ardelia Liptow: The first two responders have answered correctly.I'd just add that it's okay to ask the interviewer if they want business references or personal references.Business references can be former bosses, supervisors or co-workers. Person references can be business references, or just people who know you.Usually it's specified whether they're looking for a business or personal reference; and sometimes th! ey will specify that it cannot be a former boss or that the person must have known you at least 5 years.Best of luck in your jobsearch!ps - Careerbuilder.com; monster.com; hotjobs.com have many helpful articles on jobsearch, including: references; cover letters; resume writing; when to release reference info; etc. Check them out - they've been quite informative and helpful to me....Show more

Willa Holte: It is nice to have reference letters, but most employers prefer just a name, relationship, and contact information. There are two types of references:Professional: Those people who are willing to lie about what a great worker you are. They can be co-workers or supervisors.Personal/Character: Those people who are willing to lie about what a great person you are. These can be co-workers or friends.Make sure you have spoken with your references in advance and secured their agreement to lie about you. No one likes being caught by surprise. If the person has not agreed to! be a reference for you...they may not be very helpful. Also make sure y! ou provide correct contact information for your references. It is best to have at least 5-6 of each type of reference that you can rely upon. You only need provide three at a time, though....Show more

Jeremy Donohue: If the company desires letters of reference, they will specify this. Otherwise, it is "name/address/phone."Have a polite day.
